House Training My Puppy Was A Must. It Started With Crate Training My German Shepherd, Bronx.

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

My black german shepherd puppy was a monster when the first few days at home.   I do not consider myself obsessive compulsive, but I do like to keep my house clean and neat.  For some reason my puppy just did not understand that when he did his business on the carpet that I had to clean it up.  I even caught him peeing in his water bowl, what was that about?  My dogs behavior was just unacceptable.

The first thing I did was do some research on the best way to get my puppy under control.  House Training my puppy started with being diligent.  Anytime I saw him sniffing around the edge of any furniture or in corners I immediately walked him to the back yard.  Potty training a puppy does take some work but it was definitely worth the time and effort.  He quickly, after a few days, learned that when he had to go to the bathroom, he need to go stand at the back door.

I had also read that if he does have an accident in the house to to react to strongly.  What I did was lock him up in his dog kennel.  This was also good practice for him, as I was not ready to leave him out at night or when I was gone and had planned on crate training, Bronx.

Crate training is something that I would recommended every one to teach their dog or puppy.  Once your dog is trained you might not have to ever use a kennel again, but it is a good habit to get them into.  You never know if someone else is going to watch you dog, if they are going to require that they sleep in a kennel.  Crate Training will also save you destruction of your stuff while your puppy learns what they can chew on and what they can not.

I bought all sorts of dog toys and puppy chewing items.  Of course Bronx decided my slippers and books were more fun to play with.  I quickly learned to put my shoes and slippers in the closet and close the door, least he would sneak in a grab something to chew on.

I got a little of topic.  House Training a dog should not be major problem if you remain consistent in how you act.  Yes I did get frustrated.  Yes I found it gross that Bronx would pee in the water he had to drink.  Puppies just do not know how to behave.  By asserting myself and letting him know that I was the leader in a firm and consistent way, I was able to get my puppy to listen and start training him to be a good dog.

Black German Shepherds Are Such Wonderful Dogs. Once Your Puppy Is Trained.

Bronx, my german shepherd puppy.

Bronx, my german shepherd puppy.

When I decided that I was ready to look for a dog.  I knew that I wanted a Black German Shepherd.  German Shepherds are such beautiful dogs.  I knew that I wanted a large dog that would not only be a loyal companion, but protect me if I ever needed it.  German Shepherds have all the traits I was looking for in a dog.  Ever since I was a little girl I have wanted a to get a GSP puppy.

What I did not plan for was how hard it is to raise and properly train a puppy.  Dog training was not something that I had the foresight to think about when I made the choice to get my baby.  A trained german shepherd is a great dog to have around.  Unfortunately they do not send 10 week old puppies home fully trained.  My sleep schedule was interrupted with frequent trips outside.  After coming in from the outside he would do his business on the rug.

Those first few days I was seriously questioning my judgment.  Should I have made this major commitment in bringing home a german shepherd puppy?  My answer was yes.  I knew that german shepherds were smart dogs.  One of the most intelligent dogs.  I just had to figure out how I was going to overcome our problems together and we would both be much happier.

House training my puppy was a must to keep my house from stinking and smelling like old dog every time I came home.  Crate training my baby boy was a top priority.

Bronx is now a perfect prince.  When I take him out, I almost always get compliments on how he listens and does not misbehave around other people or dogs.
